Jour Huit – 11 de Juillet 2015: Normandy et D-Day

Coming soon...

The WWII museum in Caen, France.

Utah Beach and the Utah Beach Museum.

Monument at Utah Beach dedicated to members of the U.S. Navy who fought in the D-Day campaign.

Pointr-du-Hoc, separating Utah Beach from Omaha Beach.  Rangers climbed these 100-foot cliffs at the beginning of the
D-Day invasion in order to neutralize German fortifications and gun pits.

The Normandy American Cemetery Memorial above Omaha Beach.

The reflecting pool at the American Normandy Memorial, looking out at the cemetery.

The grave of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.  He was injured during WWI and had heart problems, but still asked to be assigned to the D-Day invasion.  The decisions he made during the battle are credited with leading to his division's success.  He died from a heart attack just over one month after the invasion.  His wish was to be buried with his men at Normandy.

Amy walking in the surf at Omaha Beach.

A German gun battery at Longues-sur-mer.  This is one of four at the site that escaped the war relatively unscathed and still have their guns pointed towards the sea.
