Day 12 – June 23, 2015: Mammoth Cave National Park (Part 1)

Paddling down the not so aptly named Green River in the non-cave part of Mammoth Cave National Park.

Getting a chilly shower from the River Styx, which begins in the cave before flowing into the Green River.

Fog on top of the eerie Echo River, another of the Green River tributaries that begins inside the cave complex.  The water from these cave rivers is a milky greenish-grey color and so cold that it creates a layer of cloud on top of it when it comes out into the very warm Kentucky air.

Exploring one of the larger tributaries feeding into the Green River.

The "historic entrance" to the Mammoth Cave complex.

Following the ranger through the caves, guided only by kerosene lantern light.

A column illuminated by one lantern.  Because the cave complex is covered by a layer of sandstone, which lets very little water through (as opposed to limestone which is much more porous), this was one of the few dripstone formations we saw in this part of the cave complex.
